THIRUPPUGAZH AANMEEKA PERUVIZHA ON 13th & 14th JULY 2013

Peerless propagator - The Hindu 31st May 2013

Guruji Raghavan

To Guruji Raghavan, who tuned and taught Tiruppugazh.

“Guruji Raghavan’s contribution to the propagation of Tiruppugazh is unparalleled,” say his admirers in one voice. While Paramacharya honoured him with the title ‘Tiruppugazh Gaana Ratnam,’ the pontiff of Sringeri Math declared that Guruji Raghavan was very close to his heart.
Two gentlemen – Narayana Iyengar and Mahalingam - requested Guruji Raghavan to set music to Tiruppugazh. They had heard the former sing in a concert in Delhi, where he had moved for employment. A ‘B’ grade artist of AIR in Mumbai, Raghavan had never sung Tiruppugazh in his concerts. He began learning the hymns to teach them in an informal class.
Rewarding experience
R. Thyagarajan, financial advisor and an active member of Tiruppugazh Anbargal Sangam, attended Guruji Raghavan’s class in 1991 after his retirement, in New Delhi. “I was at once drawn to his melodious singing and his elucidation of the hymns. I started attending his classes regularly and found them to be rewarding,” he says. Thyagarajan now heads the Chennai Region of Tiruppugazh Anbargal Sangam.
Born on September 4, 1928, to Subbaiah and Ramalakshmi, in Thoothukudi, he was brought up in Arumugamangalam, a small town on the way to Tiruchendur. Afflicted with polio, the young Raghavan could not walk easily. Sivalinga Nadar, a native vaidya and an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga, trained him to run from Thundugai Vinayaka temple to Shanmukha Vilasam in Tiruchendur in the sands and the defect was gone!
“It was an amazing fete to tune 503 songs of Arunagiri in over 110 ragas. This is the achievement of Guruji Raghavan!” says Chithra Murthy, a propagator of Tiruppugazh through her discourses. “His short bhajan sessions would last for about two hours and cover 20 hymns. The longer ones would go up to 108 songs! It was Kalyani Ramasamy, who followed Guruji Bhani here and his style of singing was established throughout.”
A self-effacing Guruji, however, did not want to take credit for tuning the songs and attributed everything to the grace of ‘Senthil Aandavan.’
“He was a pathfinder for all of us,” says Uma Balasubramaniam, daughter of the well known Tamil scholar and orator Ki.Va. Jagannathan. “We feel he was the incarnation of the sage, Arunagiri. That was why he was happy when people called him ‘Tiruppugazh Thondan.’
His participation in Padi Vizha and Sashti Bajanai in Chennai elevated the events to an ecstatic level. He tuned not only Tiruppugazh, but also Kandar Anubhuti, Kandar Alankaram, Kandar Andhadhi, Vel-Mayil-Seval Viruthangal, Thiruvaguppu and Thiru Ezhu-k-kootrirukkai.
“Guruji’s wife Janaki Mami is also well versed in Tiruppugazh. She took interest when he began singing the hymns and for over thirty years she was singing with him,” adds Chithra Murthy.
His popular serial in Kalki was ‘Thalam Thorum Thamizh Kadavull’ and he covered many temples of Lord Muruga in this serial.
N. Gopala Sundaram, who translated Tiruppugazh hymns into English, said he was shocked at hearing the news of the demise of Guruji. “I was in Mumbai when I heard the sudden passing away of our beloved Guruji. He was a great inspiration for me to take up the mammoth job of completing the translation and on May 4 this year, I had been to Tiruchendur to dedicate the 11th book in the sannadhi of Muruga. I wanted to pay my respects to him personally by handing over a copy of the book on my return to Chennai. This is impossible now,” tells Gopala Sundaram in a voice choked with emotion. As many as 30,000 copies of Guruji Raghavan’s compilation of ‘Tiruppugazh Vazhipaadu’ have been distributed at a nominal price all over the world.
Says scholar Dr. Lalita Ramakrishna of Tattvaloka, “Arunagirinathar’s Tiruppugazh is an invaluable tool to enhance our sensitivity to rhythm. The songs are powerful and are ideal for group singing.”
Guruji Raghavan rightly understood this truth and was successful in his mission of propagating Tiruppugazh inspiring Tamils spread all over the globe, to sing the praise of Muruga in the inimitable style he had evolved.

A.S. Raghavan, proponent of the Thiruppugazh hymns, breathed his last recently

Thiruppugazh Guruji A.S. Raghavan, who started a movement in the Capital in 1958 to spread the message of love, avirodham, self-discipline, unity and brotherhood through the ancient Thiruppugazh hymns, passed away last Friday in Chennai. Born in 1928, “Guruji”, as he was reverently called by his disciples, followers and others, spearheaded the movement that later came to be known as the “Thiruppugazh Anbargal”, when he started teaching the Thiruppugazh hymns to two of his students. He had been propagating the Thiruppugazh ever since, for more than five decades.
Saint Arunagirinadar, who lived in South India about 600 years ago, composed thousands of such hymns, of which only 1,400 are extant. The hymns are a treasure house of rhythmic intricacies and succinct presentation in the Tamil language and occupy a unique place in the sacred music of Tamil.
Guruji not only compiled in one work the available hymns of Saint Arunagirinadar and titled it “Thiruppugazh Madani”, he also set to tune more than 500 of these in more than 100 ragas to melodious music and precise tala, matching thechhanda (meter) of these hymns. He also evolved a pattern from the verses of Thiruppugazh for conducting an elaborate ‘wedding function’ titled “Valli Kalyanam”, which signifies the finality of life in the unification of “atma” with “paramatma”.
Besides Thiruppugazh, Guruji had also set to music the “Abhirami Andhadhi” and “Abhirami Padigam”, the verses on goddess Shakti.
When increasing numbers of people started joining the classes, which hitherto were conducted only at one place in the Capital, more and more centres too came into operation.
Guruji commanded instant respect and was a source of inspiration to hundreds of disciples and followers. People who did not have any knowledge of music, too, started joining the group. When his disciples assembled for a bhajan session, they came not for a performance but for a community prayer in which the entire audience would participate.
Some of Guruji’s disciples started migrating to other parts of the country and even to foreign countries. They took upon themselves the task of spreading Thiruppugazh by conducting classes in the places where they resided.
Thus, the “Raghavan School of Thiruppugazh singing” spread and became well established in India as well as in places like Hong Kong, Malaysia, Canada, Singapore and the U.S. Guruji’s efforts had blossomed into a large “Anbargal” family which accepted the principles enshrined in Thiruppugazh as a way of life.
Guruji shifted from the Capital to Chennai about eight years ago.
But his disciples in Delhi even today continue to perform the Thiruppugazh “Isai Vazipadu”, which strives for world peace through the medium of mass prayer, at various places in the Capital.
Apart from the regular monthly Shashti and Kirtigai bhajans that are organised in a number of localities in the Capital, the “Padivizha”, conducted on the first Sunday of January every year, and the “Saint Arunagirinadar Ninaivu Vizha” organised on October 2 every year, at New Delhi’s Malai Mandir, are most looked forward to.
While Guruji’s movement has risen to great heights, it is reassuring that the Thiruppugazh IsaiVazhipadu tradition evolved by the late A.S. Raghavan, too, will transcend generations.

A Tribute to Guruji by Uma

“GURUJI” – THE PATH OF THIRUPPUGAZH

It is hard to believe that our revered Guruji, who gave us the nectar of Thiruppugazh as Ganamrutam, who kindled the light of devotion in our heart, who showed us the path to reach Muruga is no more with us.  It is hard to believe that the golden voice that rendered Thiruppugazh in different captivating Raaga has become still.  It is hard to believe that we can no more see that magnificent face, smeared with Vibhuti, exuding an aura of divinity all over.

The very name ‘Guruji’ evokes admiration, veneration, respect and devotion.  When Sri Raghavan was born, Lord Senthil Nathan had assigned a specific task for him; the task of giving the verses of Thiruppugazh, the sound of music; the task which Guruji undertaken with great success.  He gave each song a distinct Raaga and Thaala and every song became unique in its melody and devotion.

Apart from transforming the lyric into sweet sound of music, Guruji Sri Raghavan has initiated a movement called ‘Thiruppugazh Anbargal’, which has grown by leaps and bounds.  The seed of Thiruppugazh which he planted as grown like a giant tree, spreading its branches all over Bharat and beyond.    The movement that he has initiated has spread the message of love and devotion.   It has transformed the lives of many.  It is a great wonder how a single man could do this great miracle.  There is no doubt that just as Muruga blessed Arunagirinathar to compose Thiruppugazh, Lord Muruga has blessed Guruji to highlight the glory of Thiruppugazh.

Sri Raghavan was so deeply involved in Thiruppugazh that the words ‘Thiruppugazh’ and Guruji have become synonyms.  We cannot think of one without the other.  He was a colossus.  He was a unique personality endowed with great knowledge, talent, devotion and vision.   Though he was not visiting any place recently, wherever Thiruppugazh recitals were held, his presence was experienced.  He was such an endearing personality that we felt he was always with us.  With the departure of Guruji we all feel a kind of loneliness and emptiness. It is not possible to reconcile to the reality that his physical presence can no longer be available to us.

All of us aim at reaching the Lotus Feet of Muruga.  There is no doubt that Guruji who has rendered so many songs seeking the Lotus Feet of Muruga (like Unakkamala Padhanadi  Urugiyulathamuthoora Unathu Thiruppugazhotha Arulvaye… (Pazhiyuru),  Ariya Mona Vazhi Thirantha Nalina Patham (Piraviyana) would definitely have attained the Lotus Feet of Muruga.

Guruji has shown us the path to reach Lord Muruga – the path of Thiruppugazh – and let us dedicate ourselves to pursue this path with dedication, devotion and discipline.
